MV ZEN by Maldives Legend – | 12 to 23 April 2027
Scuba divers & snorkellers
A nation born from coral. A civilisation protected by reefs.
A frontline witness to the accelerating realities of climate change.
For decades, the Maldives has stood as one of the world’s great ocean sanctuaries—renowned for its manta rays, whale sharks, shark channels and luminous coral atolls stretching across the heart of the Indian Ocean. Yet beneath this beauty lies another story: reefs scarred by repeated mass bleaching events, rising ocean temperatures, and ecological uncertainty.
And yet, against the odds, life persists. Across the vast chain of Maldivian atolls, there are still reefs of astonishing vitality. Coral gardens are recovering from collapse. Shark populations are still patrolling channels. Manta cleaning stations are still alive with movement. Pockets of resilience that may hold critical clues to the future survival of reefs globally.
Aboard the expedition vessel MV ZEN of the prestigious Maldives Legend fleet, ANIMA HAI will journey across 11 atolls spanning the central and southern Maldives:
- Kaafu (North & South Malé Atolls)
- Alif Alif (Northern Ari)
- Alif Dhaal (Southern Ari)
- Vaavu (Felidhu)
- Meemu (Mulaku)
- Faafu (Northern Nilandhe)
- Dhaalu (Southern Nilandhe)
- Thaa (Kolhumadulu)
- Laamu (Haddhunmathi)
- Gaafu Alif (Northern Huvadhu)
- Gaafu Dhaalu (Southern Huvadhu)
Animan Hai Maldives is part of the global legacy project, a mission to document reality. From thriving coral strongholds to reefs bearing the scars of bleaching; from shark-rich channels to fragile reef systems struggling to recover—ANIMA HAI seeks to create a benchmark visual and scientific archive of what remains in the Maldives today.
The expedition will document:
- coral reef health and resilience
- bleaching impacts and recovery zones
- reef fish biodiversity
- shark and manta populations
- emerging “super coral” refuges
- the relationship between reefs and island communities
This journey forms part of the wider ANIMA HAI global initiative to establish 100 geo-referenced reef benchmark sites in 2027, to be revisited in 2055 as a measure of humanity’s success—or failure—in protecting the living heart of our ocean.
If, by 2055, much of the world’s reefs are indeed lost, this expedition may become one of the last complete visual testimonies of what once existed in the Maldives.
Expedition members on ANIMA HAI become Climate Avengers.
Witnesses. Documentarians. Ocean guardians.
Together, we will explore one of Earth’s most extraordinary marine realms—not only to experience its beauty, but to preserve its memory for generations yet to come.
“Coral reefs are the crowns of our ocean — the living jewels of Earth’s blue heart. To protect them is to protect our own legacy.”
— Michael AW

Official ANIMA HAI Expedition Platform – MV Zen by Maldives Legend
Some boats take you diving, and some vessels shape the way an expedition thinks, moves, and operates. MV Zen, from Maldives Legend, belongs firmly to the latter. Its selection for ANIMA HAI is a deliberate choice of platform to match ambition. Not just a luxury add-on, it is the operational spine.
The Maldives is often experienced in fragments—one atoll, one itinerary, one curated window. ANIMA HAI rejects that. It seeks to traverse eleven atolls, from the familiar central systems to the far southern reaches where reef health, shark biomass, and coral resilience still defy expectation.
MV Zen is engineered for exactly this kind of longitudinal sweep. Its range, fuel capacity, and logistical design allow sustained operations far beyond the standard circuits. This matters. Because the story we are telling is not local—it is systemic.
A working expedition deck – The dive dhoni aboard Zen is not simply spacious—it is purposeful. Clean lines, efficient gear flow, and disciplined organisation allow large teams to move quickly between dives, surveys, and documentation runs. For ANIMA HAI, where imaging teams, scientists, and expedition members operate in parallel, this efficiency is critical. There is just quiet competence.
Stability in a moving ocean – Southern crossings in the Maldives are not always forgiving. Currents intensify, channels deepen, and distances stretch. Zen offers the kind of hull stability and onboard balance that allows both work and recovery to continue uninterrupted. When your day involves multiple dives in current-swept passes followed by editorial reviews or scientific logging, that stability is not comfort—it is a necessity.
Space to think – Cabins aboard MV Zen are clean, contemporary, and restrained—designed for restoration. Communal areas open outward: shaded decks, sunlit lounges, and quiet corners that encourage reflection. This matters more than it sounds. ANIMA HAI is not a checklist expedition. It is immersive, observational, and often confronting. The vessel must hold space not only for divers, but for thought.
A platform for storytelling – Large-format expeditions live or die on their ability to capture and translate what they witness. Zen supports this with generous working spaces, stable camera handling areas, and an environment where photographers and filmmakers can operate without friction.
ANIMA HAI is more than chasing spectacle. It is documenting what remains.
MY Argo Explorer | 29 July – 5 August 2027
Scuba divers only
Hidden along the southern reaches of the Red Sea lies one of Earth’s most extraordinary reef systems—a place where coral life has learned not just to survive heat, but to endure it. These reefs are a global anomaly: thriving in temperatures that would devastate most coral ecosystems elsewhere, carrying unique genetic signatures that may redefine what survival looks like in a warming ocean.
This ANIMA HAI expedition is a journey into one of the planet’s most important climate refugia. Here, ancient coral lineages reveal remarkable biodiversity, high endemism, and evolutionary adaptations found nowhere else on Earth. These reefs are living laboratories—offering critical clues to the future of coral resilience, restoration, and hope—yet they exist under growing pressure from warming seas, development, and isolation.
Access is rare. Scientific attention is intense. The stakes could not be higher.
Deliberately planned, this expedition coincides with the Eclipse of the Century on August 2, 2027—the longest total solar eclipse on land in the 21st century. For 6 minutes and 23 seconds, day will turn to twilight above one of the world’s most resilient reefs, inviting us to observe how life below responds when light, temperature, and time itself momentarily shift.
This is beyond an ordinary dive expedition to the Red Sea, it is a convergence of biodiversity, science, and celestial wonder— a moment to witness what the future of coral reefs may depend on.

MV Gaia Love | 20–31 August 2027
Snorkellers & scuba divers
Cenderawasih Bay, often described as the “Galápagos of the East,” is a place shaped by deep time. Once an enclosed bay during the last Ice Age, its isolation became a crucible for life. As sea levels rose, this natural laboratory emerged as a factory of endemism—producing species of fish and corals found nowhere else on Earth. Today, its calm, nutrient-rich waters are also home to one of the world’s most reliable gatherings of whale sharks—gentle giants that move with ancient grace through a sea dense with life.
From there, our expedition continues to Raja Ampat—the beating heart of reef biodiversity. Nowhere else holds such an extraordinary concentration of corals, reef fish, sharks, and invertebrates within a single seascape. Every dive reveals abundance layered upon abundance, shaped and protected for generations by traditional custodians whose stewardship remains inseparable from reef survival.
No other places offer such biological wealth, thus the urgency to protect. This ANIMA HAI expedition is both a celebration and a responsibility—to witness, document, and help safeguard the living heart of our ocean while it still beats strong.
Focus:
- Biodiversity hotspots
- Endemic species and whale sharks
- Community stewardship and traditional guardianship

MY Damai II | 9–20 December 2027
Snorkellers & scuba divers
This expedition ventures into one of the least visited and most consequential reef corridors on Earth.
Sailing from Halmahera through Morotai and onward to Raja Ampat, we traverse the remote heartland of the Coral Triangle—a region where reefs still thrive in places rarely seen, yet increasingly shaped by the pressures of development, extraction, and a warming ocean. These waters are not pristine by accident; they are resilient by necessity.
Halmahera and Morotai sit at a critical threshold. Here, expansive coral meadows persist alongside early signs of stress, adaptation, and change. These reefs offer a rare opportunity to document ecosystems in transition—where survival is still possible, but no longer guaranteed. What we observe here may become an early-warning system for reefs elsewhere in the world.
This ANIMA HAI journey is both exploration and evidence-gathering. We seek seldom-visited sites, quiet reefs beyond established routes, and unrecorded indicators of resilience—while listening closely for the subtle signals of decline. Ending in Raja Ampat, the global benchmark of reef biodiversity, the expedition provides a powerful contrast between what remains possible and what may be lost.
These reefs stand at a crossroads. Balanced between endurance and erasure.
To document the reefs in this region is to understand the current trajectory of coral reefs—and the urgency of protecting what still holds.
Focus:
- Reef resilience under fishing pressure
- Remaining healthy coral systems
- Early-warning signals of decline or adaptation
