James Caratini
James Caratini is a passionate photographer, diver, and environmental advocate born on May 25, 1961, in Sedan, France. He was the Director of Sciences Réunion from 2009 to 2023 and taught technology and photography in schools from 1981 to 2009 across Marseille, Zaire, and Réunion Island. A certified CMASS 2* diving instructor, he also founded an underwater photography club.
James co-founded the association Images Océan and has contributed to various projects, including exhibitions at the St Denis Natural History Museum and the Regional Council. His work with underwater photographer Thierry Soriano resulted in several books and exhibitions promoting marine conservation and the biodiversity of Réunion Island.

A multi-award-winning artist, James has received recognition at prestigious festivals, including Antibes, Strasbourg, and the World Underwater Image Festival in Marseille. He has also served as president of international juries, such as those at the Subios Festival in the Seychelles and the Mauritius Image Festival.

Through his work with Images Océan and Sciences Réunion, James continues to raise awareness about environmental issues while celebrating the natural beauty of Réunion Island.
